Can I be honest with you all? When I heard about the SCOTUS ruling on Wednesday essentially gutting the Voting Rights Act I didn’t even know a case was being heard about it. More embarrassingly I didn’t really know much about the Voting Rights Act and why this decision was being understood as a major blow to Black voting rights in particular. Some of my favorite creators that I trust started talking about it so I reshared their content as I got caught up to speed.
But even so as I watched video after video I still wasn’t entirely clear on what was going on. All I knew that for many people, especially those in the Black community, they were genuinely horrified by what just happened.
So I texted my friend and historian Jemar Tisby, PhD because I had to learn ASAP and get caught up to speed on what just happened this week and why this landmark decision is another massive step backwards in voting rights.
Jemar didn’t hold back. I gave him the floor and in return he gave me a masterclass on not only what the decision means but the he also gives the essential historical context so many of us never knew.
In this live with Dr. Tisby, you’ll get all of that and more as Jemar takes us through American history exposing the pattern of how White Supremacy has been fighting Black voting rights tooth and nail since the beginning and why we are in yet another moment where a supreme court majority steeped in that ideology took another blow to America actualizing the promises she made to all people.
